self-protection? However, it&#8217;s a non-negotiable when it comes to building a life that works in our favour. Even though this has been scientifically established for a while now, we still don&#8217;t yet seem to be fully at peace with it. No wonder though, when in many cases the criticism tends to pour in once we dare to prioritise our own wellbeing. </p><p>Moms who go out dancing one evening while someone else is watching their kids, people leaving relationships that didn&#8217;t serve them any longer, someone choosing not to celebrate a holiday with their family because it does them more harm than good mentally&#8230; </p><p>- there are so many more examples. Little day-to-day situations where we feel like we need to carry someone else&#8217;s responsibility just because we can still bear it. We (and I&#8217;d argue, especially women and eldest siblings) feel like it&#8217;s our task to do so. But, well - it&#8217;s not.</p><h4>The consequences of people pleasing</h4><p>According to the <a href="https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/people-pleaser">Cambridge Dictionary</a>, a people pleaser is described as &#8220;someone who cares a lot about whether other people like them, and always wants others to approve of their actions&#8221;. The problem: their behaviour usually benefits everyone around them except for them personally. Clinical psychologist Dr. Lynsey Kelly writes that people pleasing might lead to <a href="https://www.cambridge-psychologist.co.uk/blog/people-pleasing-therapy">certain consequences</a>, such as feeling unheard by those around us or uncertain of our own personal needs. In the long run, this can negatively affect both our wellbeing and sense of self.</p><p>The term has gained enormous popularity over the past couple of years, with many coaches and mentors (both self-proclaimed and actually trained) offering guidance on the topic. One of the logical main thoughts conveyed is that as a people pleaser, you should learn to <em>put yourself first</em>. That is, in some cases, how yesterday&#8217;s people pleasers become tomorrow&#8217;s egocentrics.</p><p>While this thought is of course oversimplified, I fear that it&#8217;s what&#8217;s often happening in collective mindset shifts - we swap from one extreme to the other. We tell ourselves we never want to experience something again - so we do everything differently. And by doing things differently, we lose sight of nuances.</p><h4>When we overdo it with the self-protection</h4><p>In human relationships, we want to feel <em>seen</em> while fearing to be vulnerable. Being overly self-protective can block our view of the other person so much that we might miss out on a chance for genuine connection. We can&#8217;t be as attentive as we might have wanted, simply because we&#8217;re too busy overdoing the &#8220;put yourself first&#8221; mindset. That can end up being just as harmful as being an unguarded open book to everybody without any boundary attached.</p><div><hr></div><h3>What&#8217;s the difference between a boundary and a compromise?</h3><p>Lately, I had an interesting conversation with my grandma about the difference between setting a boundary and making a compromise. For me, this is exactly what it comes down to here as well. </p><p>Self-protection is linked to setting a clear boundary. It&#8217;s saying <em>no </em>without inviting discussion. A boundary isn&#8217;t up for debate, it&#8217;s a personal stop sign we each have the right to establish at all times. A compromise, on the other hand, comes with the intent to meet the other person in the middle. It might involve taking a step back and sacrificing parts of our own vision for the sake of the connection. Compromises are naturally open to discussion, unlike boundaries. This is why, in my opinion, we should be collectively interested in internalising the difference between those two.</p><h4><em>When</em> is <em>what</em> needed?</h4><p>Compromises help us find the greatest common ground within our relationships while boundaries ensure that we never betray ourselves within the dynamic. Both are equally needed in a connection meant to let people thrive.</p><div><hr></div><h3>How much responsibility do we really have for the wellbeing of others?</h3><p>That&#8217;s a question worth asking - both because it might free us from any wrongfully adopted responsibilities that have never been ours to begin with, and because it&#8217;s a loving reminder that at the end of the day, we are never really alone in any human experience. </p><p>The way we communicate and carry ourselves doesn&#8217;t just affect us, it always has an impact on the people we cross paths with as well. Every small gesture makes a difference. Every compliment. Every sincere apology. It matters whether we experience these little moments of genuineness in our daily lives - and the more often we do, the more power they&#8217;ll have in determining our course forward.</p><p><strong>Maybe we shouldn&#8217;t just put ourselves first no matter what. <br>We should rather know when to stand firm and when to cross bridges for the people worth keeping.</strong></p><p class="button-wrapper" patients as well as for employees in the individual health sectors. Staff shortages, budget constraints, long travel distances to treatment facilities, excessive bureaucracy, and an overall lack of possibilities to address individual cases all make the recovery process significantly more difficult. The experiences faced by both patients and healthcare workers in everyday clinical practice emphasise the urgent need for action. Particularly people living in rural areas are increasingly confronted with obstacles when it comes to accessing reliable medical care.</p><p>What are the underlying causes of the current situation in make enhance people&#8217;s longevity. Demographic change is also reflected in the growing number of patients requiring medical care. Many people need more comprehensive treatment due to chronic conditions, which tend to increase with age. At the same time, there is a lack of new professionals entering primary care, as highlighted in a report published in the German Federal Health Bulletin:</p><div class="pullquote"><p>Looking at the sociodemographic situation, it becomes clear that one in three general practitioners is now aged 60 or older. [&#8230;] Calculations show that around 1,700 general practitioners leave the profession each year, while the number of newly certified specialists ranges between 1,300 and 1,400. Although the latter figure has recently increased again, the need for compensation to maintain existing care capacities has remained unmet for quite some time. [&#8230;]</p><p>&#8212; Wangler, Jansky</p></div><p>As a result of these trends, a deficit of up to 23,000 full-time general practitioner equivalents by 2030 is considered possible &#8211; particularly affecting rural and structurally weaker regions, according to Wangler and Jansky.</p><div><hr></div><h3>Why do we have to wait so long for medical appointments?</h3><p>This issue runs through all areas of rural healthcare &#8211; not only is access to general practitioners limited, but waiting times of up to a year for specialist appointments can last up to a year. A shortage of skilled professionals is not the only reason here, but rather one of several contributing factors, with bureaucracy playing a key role as well. Treatment pathways are often long because patients have to visit multiple institutions just to obtain the necessary documentation.</p><h4>Structural problems in the German healthcare system</h4><p>It may be tempting to link such challenges in everyday medical care to individual cases. However, it is reasonable to assume that most shortcomings are rooted in structural causes rather than bad intentions. The authors of a scientific publication on medical undersupply from 2025 locate the core of the problem within the structures of the healthcare system itself:</p><div class="pullquote"><p>&#8220;There is broad agreement that the greatest structural problem in the German healthcare system lies in its sector-based organisation and financing. Despite numerous initiatives aimed at &#8216;integrated care,&#8217; dating back to the Health Care Structure Act of 1992/93 (which introduced early case-based payments alongside outpatient surgery and pre- and post-inpatient care), lasting and effective integration has failed due to persistent sectoral egoisms driven by separated budgets. Any effective approach to combating medical undersupply would therefore need to start here.&#8221; </p><p>&#8211; Author Group Health</p></div><p>The term &#8220;sectoral egoism&#8221; refers to the fact that individual sectors or institutions, acting in their own economic interests, do not prioritise effective cross-sector collaboration when financial resources are allocated. This lack of clear coordination leads to understandable frustration on the patient side.</p><h4>What would need to change at a structural level?</h4><p>According to expert opinion, simply increasing staff numbers is not enough to address medical undersupply. In other words:</p><div class="pullquote"><p>&#8220;Undersupply cannot be avoided or eliminated solely by expanding capacities. Instead, it requires a strategic approach that takes regional needs into account, reduces bureaucracy, and promotes cooperation between general practitioners, specialists, different professional According to the German Bank for Pharmacists and Physicians, these incentives are showing positive effects. Individual federal states offer various forms of financial support to attract rural practitioners.</p><h4>New models of care</h4><p>New forms of healthcare delivery are being implemented to improve access in rural regions. The nearest medical practice or pharmacy is not always close by, requiring a certain level of mobility. If mobility is limited, transportation services can help. In Germany, support is available through organisations such as the German Red Cross (DRK), the Johanniter, or the Malteser. If there is a medical indication, health insurance usually covers the costs.</p><h4>How do I find a new general practitioner?</h4><p>The website arztsuche.116117.de allows users to search for doctors by entering their postal code. Alternatively, telephone support is available via the number 116117. Platforms such as Doctolib or jameda can also be used to search for doctors in the area.</p><h4>What if I need medication and there is no pharmacy nearby?</h4><p>Over-the-counter medications can be purchased from licensed online pharmacies such as Shop Apotheke or DocMorris. currently being pursued to address demographic changes such as the aging population in rural areas (and the associated increase in demand for medical care). However, it will take time before a sustainable restructuring of the rural healthcare system produces tangible results. In the meantime, patients are faced with the challenge of organising large parts of their healthcare independently, using the resources available to them. Digitalisation creates new possibilities here, allowing us to expand our options beyond geographical boundaries. Die Grenzerfahrungen, die sowohl Patienten als auch Mitarbeitende im Behandlungsalltag machen, untermauern den dringenden Handlungsbedarf. Besonders im l&#228;ndlichen Raum sehen sich Menschen mehr und mehr mit Schwierigkeiten konfrontiert, wenn es um den Zugang zu verl&#228;sslicher &#228;rztlicher Betreuung geht.</p><p><strong>Welche zuletzt dank der wachsenden medizinischen M&#246;glichkeiten immer &#228;lter. Der demografische Wandel zeigt sich auch an der steigenden Zahl an Patienten mit medizinischem Versorgungsbedarf. Menschen ben&#246;tigen h&#228;ufig eine umfassendere Behandlung aufgrund von chronischen Erkrankungen, die sich mit zunehmendem Alter h&#228;ufen. Parallel fehlt es an Nachwuchs im haus&#228;rztlichen Bereich, wie aus einem 2024 erschienenen Bericht im Bundesgesundheitsblatt hervorgeht:</p><div class="pullquote"><p>Blickt man auf die soziodemografische Situation, so zeigt sich, dass inzwischen jede/r dritte Hausa&#776;rzt*in ein Alter von 60 Jahren oder mehr erreicht hat. [&#8230;] Berechnungen zeigen, dass ja&#776;hrlich etwa 1700 Hausa&#776;rzt*innen aus der Berufsta&#776;tigkeit ausscheiden, wa&#776;hrend die facha&#776;rztlichen Anerkennungen zwischen 1300 und 1400 liegen. Obwohl Letztere zuletzt wieder anstiegen, ist der Kompensationsbedarf zur Aufrechterhaltung der bestehenden Versorgungskapazita&#776;ten seit geraumer Zeit ungedeckt. [&#8230;] </p><p>- Wangler, Jansky</p></div><p>Infolge dieser zusammenwirkenden Trends sei bis zum Jahr 2030 ein Defizit von bis zu 23.000 hausa&#776;rztlichen Vollzeit&#228;quivalenten mo&#776;glich, wobei hiervon besonders la&#776;ndliche und strukturschwache Regionen betroffen sein du&#776;rften &#8211; so Wangler und Jansky.</p><div><hr></div><h3>Warum warten wir so lange auf Arzttermine?</h3><p>Es zieht sich durch s&#228;mtliche Sparten im l&#228;ndlichen Raum - nicht nur die haus&#228;rztliche Betreuung ist knapp, auch auf Termine bei Fach&#228;rzten wartet man nicht selten bis zu einem Jahr. Fachkr&#228;ftemangel ist hier nicht der einzige Grund, sondern vielmehr einer von mehreren Aspekten, wie auch das Stichwort B&#252;rokratie in diesem Zusammenhang beweist. Behandlungswege werden unter anderem auch deshalb so lang und beschwerlich, weil Patienten f&#252;r die n&#246;tigen Dokumente oft verschiedene Stationen ansteuern m&#252;ssen.</p><h4>Strukturprobleme im deutschen Gesundheitswesen</h4><p>Es mag verlockend sein, derartige Herausforderungen im medizinischen Behandlungsalltag am Einzelfall oder einer Einzelperson festzumachen. Allerdings darf man davon ausgehen, dass hinter den meisten Vers&#228;umnissen eine strukturelle Ursache steckt und keine b&#246;se Absicht. Die Autoren einer 2025 erschienenen wissenschaftlichen Publikation zum Thema Unterversorgung verorten den Kern des Problems in den Strukturen des Gesundheitswesens:</p><div class="pullquote"><p>&#8222;Es besteht im Allgemeinen Einigkeit daru&#776;ber, dass das gro&#776;&#223;te Strukturproblem im deutschen Gesundheitswesen in der sektoralen Organisation und Finanzierung besteht. Trotz der zahlreichen Initiativen zur &#8222;integrierten Versorgung&#8220;, die bis zum Gesundheitsstrukturgesetz 1992/93 zuru&#776;ckgehen (damals wurde die Einfu&#776;hrung erster Fallpauschalen durch das ambulante Operieren und vor- und nachstationa&#776;re Versorgung flankiert) ist eine anhaltende und wirksame Integration an den fortbestehenden, durch die getrennten Budgets getriebenen Sektoregoismen gescheitert. Eine wirksame Beka&#776;mpfung der Unterversorgung mu&#776;sste also an dieser Stelle ansetzen.&#8220;  </p><p>&#8211; Autorengruppe Gesundheit</p></div><p>Mit &#8220;Sektoregoismus&#8221; ist hier gemeint, dass einzelne Bereiche oder Betriebe  bei der Verteilung der finanziellen Mittel aus wirtschaftlichem Eigeninteresse keine Priorit&#228;t auf eine funktionierende, sektor&#252;bergreifende Zusammenarbeit legen. Eine entsprechend unklare Organisation f&#252;hrt wiederum zu nachvollziehbarer Frustration auf Patientenseite.</p><h4>Was m&#252;sste sich auf struktureller Ebene &#228;ndern?</h4><p>Um medizinische Unterversorgung in den Griff zu bekommen, reicht laut Expertenmeinung ein blo&#223;es Aufstocken des Personals nicht aus. In anderen Worten:</p><div class="pullquote"><p>&#8222;Unterversorgung ist folglich nicht allein durch die Erho&#776;hung der Kapazita&#776;ten zu vermeiden bzw. zu beseitigen, sondern es bedarf eines strategischen Ansatzes, der regionale Bedu&#776;rfnisse beru&#776;cksichtigt, die Bu&#776;rokratie reduziert und die Zusammenarbeit zwischen Hausa&#776;rzten, Facha&#776;rzten, den verschiedenen Berufsgruppen und den Patienten selbst fo&#776;rdert.&#8220;  </p><p>&#8211; Autorengruppe Gesundheit</p></div><p>Zudem fehle es der gesundheitspolitischen Diskussion oft an einer klar formulierten unternommen?</h3><h4>Landarztquote</h4><p>Um der regionalen medizinischen Unterversorgung entgegenzusteuern, arbeitet ein Gro&#223;teil der Bundesl&#228;nder, wie Baden-W&#252;rttemberg oder Bayern, mit der sogenannten Landarztquote. Hier werden angehende Medizinstudierende unter der Voraussetzung zugelassen, dass sie sich im Anschluss an ihr Studium f&#252;r eine T&#228;tigkeit als Land&#228;rzte verpflichten.</p><h4>Finanzielle F&#246;rderungen</h4><p>&#196;rzte, die in unterversorgten oder von Unterversorgung bedrohten l&#228;ndlichen R&#228;umen praktizieren, erhalten finanzielle F&#246;rderungen. Nach eigenen Angaben der Deutschen Apotheker- und &#196;rztebank zeigen diese auch Wirkung. Die einzelnen Bundesl&#228;nder stellen hier verschiedene <strong><a href="https://www.praktischarzt.de/magazin/arbeit-als-landarzt-uebersicht-der-foerdermoeglichkeiten/">F&#246;rderungen</a></strong> f&#252;r ihre Land&#228;rzte in Aussicht.</p><h4>Neue Versorgungsformen</h4><p>Damit die Versorgung im l&#228;ndlichen Raum besser gedeckt ist, kommen neue Versorgungsformen zum Einsatz. Darunter f&#228;llt neben der Telemedizin auch die Behandlung in sogenannten medizinischen Versorgungszentren (MVZ). Diese bieten den Vorteil, dass &#196;rzte verschiedener Fachrichtungen unter einem Dach praktizieren, was besonders f&#252;r l&#228;ndlich lebende Patienten mit weiten Anfahrtswegen die Versorgung zug&#228;nglicher macht.</p><div><hr></div><h3>Welche M&#246;glichkeiten haben wir als Patienten?</h3><p>Gespr&#228;che &#252;ber strukturelle Probleme k&#246;nnen einen mit Gef&#252;hlen von Hilflosigkeit und &#220;berforderung zur&#252;cklassen. Es mag zwar stimmen - strukturelle Probleme k&#246;nnen nur auf struktureller Ebene beseitigt werden - jedoch bleibt die Frage nach den eigenen Gestaltungsm&#246;glichkeiten im praktischen Alltag.</p><h4>Wie komme ich zum Arzt, wenn ich selbst mobil eingeschr&#228;nkt bin?</h4><p>Insbesondere auf dem Land gilt der Faktor Distanz. Die n&#228;chste Praxis oder Apotheke befindet sich nicht immer in wohnnaher Umgebung, was eine gute Mobilit&#228;t seitens der Patienten erforderlich macht. Ist diese eingeschr&#228;nkt, k&#246;nnen Fahrdienste Abhilfe schaffen. Entsprechende Unterst&#252;tzung findet man in Deutschland beim <strong><a href="https://www.drk.de/hilfe-in-deutschland/senioren/mobilitaet/fahrdienst/">Deutschen Roten Kreuz (DRK)</a></strong>, den <strong><a href="https://www.johanniter.de/dienste-leistungen/medizinische-hilfe/fahrdienst/">Johannitern</a></strong> oder den <strong><a href="https://www.malteser.de/fahrdienst.html">Maltesern</a></strong>. Liegt eine medizinische Indikation vor, &#252;bernimmt in der Regel die Krankenkasse die Kosten.</p><h4>Wie finde ich einen neuen Hausarzt?</h4><p>&#220;ber die Website &#8216;<strong><a href="https://arztsuche.116117.de/">arztsuche.116117.de</a></strong>&#8217; ist es m&#246;glich, nach Angabe der Postleitzahl auf Arztsuche zu gehen. Alternativ kann man mithilfe der Nummer &#8216;116117&#8217; telefonische Unterst&#252;tzung bei der Arztsuche bekommen. Auch &#252;ber <strong><a href="https://www.doctolib.de/">Doctolib</a></strong> oder <strong><a href="https://www.jameda.de/">jameda</a></strong> kann nach &#196;rzten in der Umgebung gesucht werden.</p><h4>Was, wenn ich Medikamente brauche und keine Apotheke in meiner N&#228;he habe?</h4><p>Rezeptfreie Medikamente k&#246;nnen in offiziellen Online-Apotheken wie der <strong><a href="https://www.shop-apotheke.com/">Shop Apotheke</a></strong> oder <strong><a href="https://www.docmorris.de/">DocMorris</a></strong> erworben werden. Ver&#228;nderung wie der &#220;beralterung auf dem Land beizukommen (und dem damit verbundenen wachsenden Versorgungsbedarf), wird an verschiedenen L&#246;sungsans&#228;tzen gearbeitet. Bis eine nachhaltige Umstrukturierung unseres Gesundheitssystems im l&#228;ndlichen Raum sp&#252;rbare Wirkung zeigt, braucht es jedoch Zeit. Patienten stehen w&#228;hrenddessen vor der Herausforderung, ihre Gesundheitsversorgung mit den zur Verf&#252;gung stehenden Mitteln zu gro&#223;en Teilen selbstst&#228;ndig zu organisieren. Hier &#246;ffnet die Digitalisierung einige T&#252;ren und erlaubt uns somit, unsere M&#246;glichkeiten &#252;ber etwaige geografische Grenzen hinaus auszuweiten. The tradition of New Year&#8217;s resolutions can be traced back around 4,000 years. While there are various theories about its exact origin, many sources locate it in ancient Babylon. At the start of the new year, Babylonians made promises to their gods &#8211; practices that are often seen as precursors to today&#8217;s New Year&#8217;s resolutions. Similar rituals can also be found in the Roman Empire, such as offerings to the god Janus, the namesake of the month of January. Later on, the custom made its way into Christianity, where it was intended to encourage believers to reflect on past mistakes and make better choices moving forward.</p><h4><strong>Growing in popularity: the Rauhn&#228;chte ritual</strong></h4><p>The so-called Rauhn&#228;chte ritual (roughly translated to &#8220;Magic Nights&#8221; or &#8220;Rough Nights&#8221;) with its Germanic-Celtic roots has long found its way into the personal development mainstream. According to pre-Christian traditions, the period from December 25 to January 6 is considered a transitional phase with strong spiritual energy. It is believed to be a particularly effective time for processes such as letting go of old burdens or sending wishes for the future into the universe. Traditionally, 13 wishes for the coming year are written down on separate pieces of paper and folded before December 25. From then until January 5, one wish is burned each day, symbolically handing it over to the universe. The remaining thirteenth wish is said to be the one we must take care of ourselves. The ritual continues to gain popularity each year, which is also reflected in the growing number of products available around the Rauhn&#228;chte.</p><div><hr></div><h3><strong>The most common New Year&#8217;s resolutions for 2026</strong></h3><p>A survey conducted by <a href="https://de.statista.com/statistik/daten/studie/952182/umfrage/umfrage-in-deutschland-zu-den-beliebtesten-neujahrsvorsaetzen/">Statista</a> found that every second participant primarily wants to build up more financial reserves in 2026. According to the same data, the focus of this year&#8217;s New Year&#8217;s resolutions, alongside saving money, lies mainly on health. Eating healthier, exercising more, and losing weight once again rank among the most frequently mentioned goals, closely followed by the desire to spend more time with others and reduce social media consumption.</p><p>Since 2011, the German health insurance provider <a href="https://www.dak.de/presse/bundesthemen/umfragen-studien/gute-vorsaetze-bei-jungen-menschen-im-trend_154232">DAK-Gesundheit</a> has also conducted annual surveys on New Year&#8217;s resolutions among the German population. The results for 2026 are comparable to Statista&#8217;s findings: time, stress, and health are once again at the forefront of participants&#8217; resolutions. Respondents expressed a desire not only to spend more time with family and friends, but also to prioritise their own health more strongly. The survey carried out by the forsa institute primarily focused on younger people. However, given the findings of the Statista survey, it can be assumed that these resolutions are similarly prevalent across other age groups.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a In 2026, this day fell on January 9. For this year&#8217;s &#8220;quitters&#8221; though, the period following Quitter&#8217;s Day can also serve as an opportunity to adjust goals in a way that still allows them to be achieved.</p><div><hr></div><h3><strong>What can we do to improve our chances?</strong></h3><p>Across scientific disciplines, there is broad agreement that a goal such as a New Year&#8217;s resolution needs to be tangible in order to be attainable. So, what actually increases our chances of success?</p><h4><strong>Realistic expectations &#8211; especially when it comes to time</strong></h4><p>When we set ourselves a long-desired goal with great enthusiasm, we often wish we had already achieved it yesterday. This comes as no surprise: the desire for change is frequently linked to a certain level of dissatisfaction with the current situation, which can make it particularly difficult to remain patient while waiting for visible results. Processes such as developing new habits are usually both time- and energy-intensive. Sustainable change rarely comes with a quick fix, which means that working towards a habit-based goal is naturally allowed to take time. And being aware of what is realistically possible helps bring expectations and outcomes into better alignment.</p><h4><strong>Creating measurability</strong></h4><p>Large goals can be broken down into smaller milestones, such as clearly defined daily or weekly targets. Taking the resolution &#8220;to eat healthier&#8221; as an example, it is important to clarify how exactly we plan to approach this on an individual level. For some, eating healthier might mean drinking two litres of water a day; for others, it could involve creating meal plans and shopping groceries accordingly. &#8220;More movement&#8221; might translate into taking a 15-minute walk every day or returning to exercise three times a week after a longer break. Similarly, spending more time with family and friends can be achieved through the intentional planning of shared activities. All of these examples illustrate that specifying a resolution in concrete terms ideally allows it to become tangible in everyday life.</p><p>Making progress measurable through small, regular successes can not only increase motivation, but also strengthen perseverance during more challenging phases.</p><h4><strong>Relying on support</strong></h4><p>Achieving a New Year&#8217;s resolution can be understood as a learning process that includes stages where we may feel stuck or unsure of how to proceed. Seeking support in the form we need can therefore have a strong positive impact on our chances of success. Sports groups and fixed training schedules, for example, can help establish a movement-related goal. The range of available resources is particularly vast in the wellness sector, offering suitable options for a wide variety of budgets.</p><p>Support can also mean talking to a trusted person about the goals we are pursuing. Sharing both setbacks and successes often makes the journey towards achieving a goal significantly easier.</p><h4><strong>Allowing for setbacks</strong></h4><p>When working towards New Year&#8217;s resolutions, setbacks are statistically almost inevitable. However, they do not necessarily have to be interpreted as a sign that we should give up. Often, it is not the setback itself that leads to failure, but the subsequent loss of motivation. Our attitude towards failure therefore plays a crucial role in determining whether we remain committed to our resolutions.</p><p>If the original goal does not truly resonate with us on a deeper level, intrinsic motivation may be lacking &#8211; the very motivation that would otherwise support perseverance in decisive moments. Die Tradition der Neujahrsvors&#228;tze l&#228;sst sich etwa 4000 Jahre zur&#252;ckverfolgen. W&#228;hrend verschiedene Theorien dar&#252;ber kursieren, wo genau der Brauch seinen Ursprung hat, verorten ihn viele Quellen im antiken Babylon. Die Babylonier formulierten zum Jahreswechsel Versprechen an ihre G&#246;tter, die als Vorg&#228;nger f&#252;r die heutigen Neujahrsvors&#228;tze angesehen werden k&#246;nnen. Auch im r&#246;mischen Reich lassen sich Hinweise auf &#228;hnliche Rituale finden, wie Opfergaben an den Gott Janus, dem Namensgeber des Monats Januar. Sp&#228;ter fand der Brauch seinen Weg ins Christentum, wo er Gl&#228;ubige dazu animieren sollte, &#252;ber vergangene Fehler zu reflektieren und k&#252;nftig besser zu entscheiden.</p><h4>Immer popul&#228;rer: das Rauhn&#228;chte-Ritual</h4><p>Das sogenannte Rauhn&#228;chte-Ritual mit seinen germanisch-keltischen Wurzeln hat l&#228;ngst seinen Weg in den Pers&#246;nlichkeitsentwicklungs-Mainstream gefunden. Der Zeitraum vom 25. Dezember bis zum 6. Januar gilt nach vorchristlichem Brauch als &#220;bergangsphase mit starker spiritueller Energie, in der Prozesse wie das Loslassen von altem Ballast oder das Entsenden von Zukunftsw&#252;nschen ins Universum besonders effektiv sein sollen. Klassischerweise werden vor dem 25. Dezember 13 W&#252;nsche f&#252;rs neue Jahr formuliert, auf einzelne Zettel geschrieben und gefaltet. Bis zum 5. Januar wird t&#228;glich je einer der W&#252;nsche verbrannt und damit praktisch dem Universum &#252;bergeben. Letztlich der &#252;briggebliebene dreizehnte Zettel gilt als der Wunsch, um dessen Erf&#252;llung man sich selbst k&#252;mmern darf. Der Brauch findet j&#228;hrlich mehr Anklang, was sich auch in der steigenden Zahl von erwerbbaren Produkten rund um die Rauhn&#228;chte zeigt.</p><div><hr></div><h3><strong>Die beliebtesten Neujahrsvors&#228;tze f&#252;r 2026</strong></h3><p>Eine Erhebung von <a href="https://de.statista.com/statistik/daten/studie/952182/umfrage/umfrage-in-deutschland-zu-den-beliebtesten-neujahrsvorsaetzen/">Statista</a> ergab, dass jede zweite befragte Person 2026 vor allem mehr finanzielle R&#252;cklagen bilden m&#246;chte. Derselben Statistik zufolge liegt der Fokus f&#252;r die diesj&#228;hrigen Neujahrsvors&#228;tze neben dem Punkt &#8222;Geld sparen&#8220; vor allem auf der Gesundheit. Eine ges&#252;ndere Ern&#228;hrung, mehr Sport und Abnehmen z&#228;hlen auch in diesem Jahr zu den am h&#228;ufigsten genannten Zielen, dicht gefolgt von dem Wunsch, sich mehr Zeit f&#252;r seine Mitmenschen zu nehmen und daf&#252;r den Social Media-Konsum zu reduzieren. Die <a href="https://www.dak.de/presse/bundesthemen/umfragen-studien/gute-vorsaetze-bei-jungen-menschen-im-trend_154232">DAK-Gesundheit</a> l&#228;sst seit 2011 ebenfalls Umfragen zum Thema Neujahrsvors&#228;tze bei der deutschen Bev&#246;lkerung durchf&#252;hren. Aus den Ergebnissen f&#252;r 2026 geht hervor, dass auch hier die Aspekte Zeit, Stress und Gesundheit bei den Vors&#228;tzen der Teilnehmenden im Vordergrund stehen. Befragte wollen demnach auch hier nicht nur mehr Zeit mit Familie und Freunden verbringen, sondern auch die eigene Gesundheit h&#246;her priorisieren. Im Fokus der Befragung, die vom <a href="https://www.forsa.de/ueber-forsa/">forsa</a>-Institut durchgef&#252;hrt wurde, standen prim&#228;r junge Menschen, wobei die genannten Vors&#228;tze auch in anderen Altersgruppen am st&#228;rksten vertreten sein d&#252;rften, nachdem auch die bereits erw&#228;hnte Statista-Erhebung zu &#228;hnlichen Ergebnissen kam.</p><div Sowohl die Statista-Erhebung als auch die Ergebnisse der forsa-Umfrage unterstreichen den Punkt der fehlenden Skalierbarkeit bei Neujahrsvors&#228;tzen. &#8222;Mehr Zeit f&#252;r Dinge haben&#8220; ist hier ebenso schwer messbar wie &#8222;sich ges&#252;nder zu ern&#228;hren&#8220;. Beides obliegt in dieser Formulierung unserer subjektiven Wahrnehmung, die nicht zwingend etwas &#252;ber die tats&#228;chliche Zielentwicklung aussagen muss.</p><h4>Quitter&#8217;s Day</h4><p>Der zweite Freitag im Januar gilt allgemein hin als sogenannter &#8222;Quitter&#8216;s Day&#8220; &#8211; als der Tag, an dem statistisch gesehen die meisten Menschen ihre Neujahrsvors&#228;tze aufgeben. Im Jahr 2026 fiel er damit auf den 9. Januar. F&#252;r jeden diesj&#228;hrigen &#8222;Quitter&#8220; kann die Zeit nach dem Quitter&#8217;s Day jedoch auch eine Gelegenheit sein, Ziele so anzupassen, dass sie dennoch erreicht werden k&#246;nnen.</p><div><hr></div><h3><strong>Was k&#246;nnen wir tun, um unsere Chancen zu verbessern?</strong></h3><p>In der Wissenschaft kommt man disziplin&#252;bergreifend zu dem Schluss, dass ein gesetztes Ziel wie ein Neujahrsvorsatz greifbar sein muss, um erreichbar zu sein. Was steigert also die Erfolgschancen?</p><h4>Realistische Erwartungen &#8211; auch beim Thema Zeit</h4><p>Wenn wir uns mit Feuereifer ein hei&#223; begehrtes Ziel setzen, h&#228;tten wir dieses h&#228;ufig lieber gestern als heute erreicht. Kein Wunder: ein Ver&#228;nderungswunsch h&#228;ngt nicht selten mit einem gewissen Leidensdruck unter der Ist-Situation zusammen, was es oft merklich erschwert, geduldig auf sp&#252;rbare Ergebnisse zu warten. Prozesse wie die Entwicklung neuer Gewohnheiten sind jedoch meist ein zeit- und energieintensives Unterfangen. Es gibt selten einen &#8222;Quick-Fix&#8220; mit nachhaltig andauerndem Effekt und demnach darf die Umsetzung eines gewohnheitsbasierten Ziels auch seine Zeit dauern. Sich dessen bewusst zu sein, was im Rahmen des M&#246;glichen ist, bringt Erwartung und Ergebnis in ein stimmigeres Verh&#228;ltnis.</p><h4>Messbarkeit schaffen</h4><p>Gro&#223;e Ziele lassen sich in kleine Zwischenetappen einteilen, wie in klare Tages- oder Wochenziele. Sich mehr Zeit f&#252;r Familie und Freunde zu nehmen l&#228;sst sich beispielsweise durch gezielte Planung von Aktivit&#228;ten umsetzen. All diese Beispiele zeigen, dass die Pr&#228;zisierung eines Vorsatzes im Idealfall dazu f&#252;hrt, dass er im Alltagsleben sp&#252;rbar wird.</p><p>Fortschritte messbar zu machen kann durch die regelm&#228;&#223;igen kleinen Erfolgserlebnisse also einerseits die Motivation erh&#246;hen und zudem das Durchhalteverm&#246;gen in schweren Phasen steigern.</p><h4>Auf Unterst&#252;tzung bauen</h4><p>Das Erreichen eines Jahresvorsatzes kann als Lernprozess gesehen werden, der Etappen beinhaltet, an denen wir m&#246;glicherweise nicht weiterwissen. Unterst&#252;tzung zu holen in der Form, in der wir sie brauchen, wirkt sich daher stark positiv auf unsere Erfolgschancen aus. Sportgruppen und fixe Trainingstage helfen beispielsweise bei der Etablierung eines Bewegungsziels. Die Breite an m&#246;glichen Ressourcen, auf die wir zugreifen k&#246;nnen, ist besonders im Wellnesssektor praktisch unendlich und bietet entsprechende M&#246;glichkeiten f&#252;r verschiedene Budgets.</p><p>Unterst&#252;tzung kann genauso bedeuten, mit ausgew&#228;hlten Menschen &#252;ber die angestrebten Ziele zu sprechen. Sowohl die R&#252;ckschl&#228;ge als auch die Erfolgserlebnisse zu teilen erleichtert den Weg zur Verwirklichung eines Ziels in vielen F&#228;llen enorm.</p><h4>R&#252;ckschl&#228;ge miteinkalkulieren</h4><p>Bei der Umsetzung von Jahresvors&#228;tzen d&#252;rfen wir allein schon statistisch gesehen mit R&#252;ckschl&#228;gen rechnen. Dies muss jedoch nicht zwingend als Zeichen zum Aufgeben gewertet werden. Nicht unbedingt der R&#252;ckschlag selbst f&#252;hrt zum Scheitern eines Ziels, sondern die anschlie&#223;ende Demotivation. Die Einstellung zum Scheitern beeinflusst daher ma&#223;geblich, ob wir unseren Vors&#228;tzen treu bleiben.</p><p>Wenn die urspr&#252;ngliche Zielvorstellung selbst auf keine echte Resonanz in unserem Inneren st&#246;&#223;t, fehlt unter Umst&#228;nden die intrinsische Motivation, die das Durchhalteverm&#246;gen in entscheidenden Momenten anderenfalls st&#228;rken w&#252;rde. Daher muss ein fr&#252;hes Scheitern am Neujahrsvorsatz kein Scheitern im klassischen Sinne bedeuten, sondern kann genauso die Neuausrichtung erm&#246;glichen, die wir brauchen, um letztlich doch zu Und es sind gerade die Verbindungen, die uns auf besondere Weise ber&#252;hren, die uns sp&#252;rbar wachsen lassen.</p><div><hr></div><h3><strong>Es gibt hier keinen Schuldigen.</strong></h3><p>Man kann derzeit beobachten, dass besonders der Begriff der &#8222;toxischen Beziehung&#8220; ann&#228;hernd inflation&#228;r in &#246;ffentlichen Beziehungsdiskursen verwendet wird. Und in vielen dieser Geschichten gibt es die klar zugeschriebene Rolle des B&#246;sewichts, der die andere Person mit voller Intention sch&#228;digt, indem er sie dem&#252;tigt, bel&#252;gt, kontrolliert, manipuliert. In den dysfunktionalen Beziehungen des realen Lebens existiert dieser B&#246;sewicht allerdings nicht, und es ist auch nicht prinzipiell einer immer schuld daran, dass es nicht funktioniert. Dysfunktionalit&#228;t ist das Ergebnis von meist fr&#252;hzeitig erlernten, selbstsabotierenden Verhaltensmustern, die uns eigentlich sch&#252;tzen sollen &#8211; und f&#252;r die wir selbst noch keine bessere L&#246;sung kennen. H&#228;ufig sind wir uns nicht einmal dar&#252;ber bewusst, dass wir sie &#252;berhaupt haben.</p><h3><strong>Wenn die andere Person wollte, dann w&#252;rde sie?</strong></h3><p>So einfach ist es meist nicht. Viele wollen schon, aber k&#246;nnen nicht &#8211; oder wissen einfach noch nicht, wie. Pr&#228;gung l&#228;sst sich weder von heute auf morgen ver&#228;ndern noch allein aus purer Willenskraft. Es braucht die entsprechenden Werkzeuge. Dieses besagte &#8222;wie&#8220;. Nicht nur die Wunschvorstellung, wie es irgendwann sein soll, sondern auch ein klares Bild von den konkreten Handlungen, die einen dorthin bringen. Dieser Weg f&#252;hrt h&#228;ufig erst in die eigene Vergangenheit, wo der heutige Ist-Zustand seine Wurzeln hat. Und f&#252;r diese Reise braucht es das geeignete Setting. Einen sicheren Rahmen, der sie erm&#246;glicht. Und die &#220;berwindung, sie anzutreten.</p><div><hr></div><h3><strong>Wir sind formbar &#8211; Pr&#228;gung hin, oder her.</strong></h3><p>Unser Denken mag zwar von unseren Erfahrungen gepr&#228;gt sein, doch Menschen sind nicht statisch. Unser Gehirn ist in jedem Alter in der Lage, alte Verkn&#252;pfungen zu l&#246;sen und neue zu bilden (Stichwort: Neuroplastizit&#228;t). Darunter fallen auch &#196;ngste, &#220;berzeugungen und andere Altlasten, die wir nicht l&#228;nger mit uns herumtragen m&#246;chten. Das gilt ebenso f&#252;r die Art und Weise, wie wir k&#252;nftige Beziehungen f&#252;hren wollen.</p><p>Liebe allein heilt keine Dysfunktionalit&#228;t. Das kann sich wie eine bittere Wahrheit anf&#252;hlen, besonders dann, wenn man sich wirklich gew&#252;nscht h&#228;tte, dass die erhoffte Ver&#228;nderung irgendwann eintritt. Dysfunktionale Muster werden h&#228;ufig ja genau deshalb wiederholt, weil man nichts anderes kennt. Um Dysfunktionalit&#228;t zu verstehen, ist es darum erforderlich, die eigenen, unbewussten Verhaltensmuster zu reflektieren. Und gerade, <em>weil</em> sie unbewusst sind, kann eine Auseinandersetzung in einem professionellen Rahmen ein Lichtblick sein. Mit einer unbeteiligten neutralen Person, die darauf spezialisiert ist. Unter anderem bieten psychologische Beratung oder Psychotherapie geeignete Rahmenbedingungen daf&#252;r, vorausgesetzt, man f&#252;hlt sich bereit dazu. Hier darf man auf die Unterst&#252;tzung von erfahrenen Experten setzen und bei dem stetig wachsenden Angebot in der sogenannten Lifecoaching-Szene eher Vorsicht walten lassen. Die Berufsbezeichnung &#8222;Coach&#8220; ist nicht gesch&#252;tzt und erfordert keine nachweisbare Qualifikation. Kunden sind darauf angewiesen, dass die entsprechenden Lebensberater ihre eigenen Kompetenzgrenzen realistisch einsch&#228;tzen k&#246;nnen und ihre Kunden an professionelle psychologische Beratungsstellen weiterverweisen, sollte deren Bedarf an Unterst&#252;tzung gr&#246;&#223;er sein &#8211; h&#228;ufig unm&#246;glich im Vorfeld &#252;berpr&#252;fbar und f&#252;r den Menschen, der diese Leistung in Anspruch nimmt, im schlimmsten Fall eher sch&#228;digend als heilsam.</p><p>Wir k&#246;nnen unsere eigenen blinden Flecken erst sehen, wenn uns jemand anders auf sie aufmerksam macht. Aus diesem Grund brauchen wir regelm&#228;&#223;ig Perspektiven von au&#223;en, von Menschen, denen wir vertrauen.</p><div><hr></div><h3><strong>K&#246;nnen wir also gegen Dysfunktionalit&#228;t &#8222;anlieben&#8220;?</strong></h3><p>Liebe kann Motivation sein, eine gro&#223;e sogar &#8211; aber sie kann uns die Beziehungsarbeit nicht abnehmen. Nicht alle dysfunktionalen Beziehungen k&#246;nnen ohne weiteres funktional werden und daran muss niemand zwingend &#8218;schuld&#8216; sein. Es ist h&#228;ufig viel mehr eine Frage der inneren Bereitschaft, der Kapazit&#228;t und der Zugangsm&#246;glichkeit &#8211; nicht allein nur eine reine Willensfrage.</p><p>Auch wenn Pr&#228;gung viel ausmacht, bestimmt sie nicht absolutistisch &#252;ber den weiteren Verlauf unseres Lebens oder unsere Erfolgschancen auf stabile und erf&#252;llende soziale Beziehungen.</p><p>Dysfunktionalit&#228;t ist keine Sackgasse. Aber sie ist nicht unbegr&#252;ndet. Wenn wir uns anschauen, wie &#246;ffentlich mit Menschen umgegangen wird, die eine Handlung begangen haben, die Ihnen im Nachhinein als Fehler angelastet wird, ist diese Aussicht alles andere als ansprechend. einer Instagram-Reichweite von &#252;ber 300 Tausend Menschen, ist bekannt f&#252;r ihre sanfte Stimme, mit der sie die selbstgeschriebenen Texte in ihren Videos vortr&#228;gt. Mit genau dieser Stimme liest sie auch den Text im Video vom 1. August, den sie mit der Anrede &#8222;An Alle Ausl&#228;nder:innen&#8220; beginnt.</p><p>Hami Nguyen, Buchautorin und Aktivistin insbesondere zum Thema anti-asiatischer Rassismus, reagiert am 12. August auf dieses Video mit einer eigenen Version &#8211; einer Mischung aus Parodie und politischer Aufkl&#228;rung.</p><p>W&#228;hrend dieser Austausch nun schon einige Wochen her ist, ist die Problematik brandaktuell und immer wiederkehrend.
